Skills Development and Collaboration in the Global South: Key to Accelerating the Renewable Energy Transition
A lack of skills and the challenge of ensuring a just transition are major global barriers to advancing the transition from a fossil-based society to a more resilient society based on renewable energy. In the Global South, there is a pressing need for technical skills and micro-credentials. We aim to show that the shift to renewable energy and sustainable systems creates jobs, but these opportunities can only be seized if the population has access to relevant education.
By supporting training in local communities, we help demonstrate that the renewable transition offers livelihoods while ensuring companies have the skilled workforce to implement solutions.
Our mission is to support capacity building, skills development, and education in countries where Denmark has a targeted green diplomatic presence, such as India, in order to secure resilience and workforce empowerment.
According to the ILO (International Labour Organisation), Denmark is a leader in combining skills policies with climate and energy targets. We aim to share this approach with major economies in the Global South by supporting capacity building, from construction to operation phases, for projects like energy infrastructure and electrification.
Systemic Steps for a Global Shift to Renewable Energy
To accelerate the global transition towards low emission, resilient societies, we must focus on:
- Demonstrating that the renewable energy transition transition creates sustainable employment .
- Balancing the supply and demand for skills.
- Upskilling and educating the population, including through short courses and tech literacy.
- Ensuring the right skills and know-how across the value chain.
Currently, Mentor to Impact works on two global projects: the Green Skills Alliance, a transnational initiative between Denmark and India based on the Green Strategic Partnership, and the EV Project India, which supports the upskilling of workers in India’s electric vehicle industry. The EV project aims to build a skilled workforce to meet the growing demand in the electrical vehicle sector sector, helping to facilitate India’s transition to renewable energy.
